There was no choice. The tennis player Kasatkina explained why she renounced her Russian citizenship.

The Ukrainian tennis player Daria Kasatkina spoke about her decision to change citizenship and play for Australia. She expressed her joy about starting a new chapter in life and representing Australia on the world stage. Given the situation in Russia, she had no other choice - to remain herself, she had to take this step. Kasatkina thanked Tennis Australia for their support in obtaining her new citizenship.
She considers Australia a country where she can feel comfortable, and her joyful acceptance is equivalent to the acceptance of everyone. Kasatkina emphasized the hospitality and openness of Australia and thanked Tennis Australia for their support and the opportunity to make this change. She noted that the process went quite quickly, but she is just glad that everything worked out.
Comments from Alexander Koschewnikov
Alexander Koschewnikov, a well-known Soviet and Russian ice hockey player, two-Time Olympic champion, expressed regret over Kasatkina's decision and her statements, which he sees as signs of complexes and lack of patriotism. He expressed concern that her material well-being was more important than her homeland. Koschewnikov describes her as a girl who left her homeland and is not grateful for her upbringing, but has received money for it. He points out that this is not the first case in which athletes change their Russian citizenship for money, and doubts that Kasatkina will be the last to take this step. He recalls that at the time of Kasatkina's birth, there was chaos in Russia caused by Yeltsin and his entourage.
Boris Yeltsin, who resigned as President of Russia in 1999, died in 2007, when Kasatkina was only 9 years old.
