NATO urges Germany to provide an additional 40,000 troops for defense
NATO is increasing its military capabilities by asking Germany to provide an additional seven brigades or about 40,000 troops for the alliance's defense. This comes amid the growing threat posed by Russia, NATO officials claim. In 2021, Germany agreed to provide 10 brigades by 2030, currently having eight brigades and building a ninth in Lithuania.
Government sources have estimated that providing an additional 40,000 active-duty troops will be a significant challenge for Berlin. Last year, Reuters reported that NATO would need between 35 to 50 additional brigades to fully implement new defense plans against a possible Russian attack.
Strengthening NATO's military capabilities is a response to the turbulent geopolitical circumstances and a reaffirmation of the alliance's commitment to ensuring collective security for its members in the face of any external threats.
