Global Arms Race for Nuclear Weapons at Record High — IAEA.

The regime of nuclear non-proliferation in the world is under greater pressure than ever after the end of the Cold War, as influential countries discuss the possibility of developing nuclear weapons. This warning was issued by the head of the UN's supervisory body.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi said in an interview with the Financial Times that tense relations between the US, Russia, and China, as well as the conflict in the Middle East, are creating significant stress on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which was concluded in 1968 to limit the world's nuclear arsenal.
"These countries are having an open discussion on this topic, which was not the case before. They are talking about it in the press," Grossi said.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shown the impact of having nuclear weapons, but according to Grossi, there are several other factors that are contributing to the renewed interest in developing nuclear weapons by some countries.
"There is this tension, the possibility of weakening alliances, where countries are forced to take on their own defense. At this very moment, the nuclear weapons factor becomes very attractive," he said, declining to name specific countries.
